Westwind Begins Division 1 play
with a statement
The Westwind Warriors
played for fallen teammate Marcus Hendrix last night and made a
statement that the Warriors can stand up to adversity and will fight on every possession. Damion
Rashford’s 33 point 9 rebound performance complimented 25 points and
8 assists from Peewee Gardner. The story however, was the team
defense and intensity brought about by the entire Warrior squad as
Westwind controlled the glass and shut down jump shooters during an
86-72 victory over a very good Horizon Huskies team. Westwind’s next
game is Tuesday 11/29 at Deer Valley High School.

PRESCOTT VALLEY - It rained Saturday in Prescott
Valley .
There were
even snow flurries for a few hours.
And then there
was another outburst the same night, this one caused by the offense
of Phoenix Westwind Prep.
Westwind's
offense reigned Saturday night, dispatching Thatcher 82-63 to win
the boys Class 2A state championship at Tim's Toyota Center .
Led by
red-hot shooters from all over the floor, especially from beyond
the arc, Westwind dominated from start to finish en route to an
easy victory.

Smith
Projected as 1st Round Selection in 2012 NBA Draft
Westwind Prep alum 6-10 Greg Smith and
current Fresno State Bulldog
Last
season, Smith did exactly what coaches expect from a freshman big
man. He played within his abilities, played big, got on the offensive
glass, and finished around the hoop. With Sylvester Seay and Paul
George no longer on the roster, it will be an opportunity for Smith
to show that he is more than an impressive physical specimen who can
handle the garbage. Fresno State’s coach Steve Cleveland believes
that it will be Greg Smith who will step up in the absence of Paul
George going so far as to say that he can be a 16 and 10 guy every
night this coming season, and such a stat line combined with his
physical strength and athleticism would turn quite a few heads. Smith
has a knack for drawing fouls and getting to the line, but to truly
maximize that ability he needs to convert on better than 58.6 percent
from the charity stripe. The rebounding numbers may be more important
for Fresno State as Seay and George were the top defensive rebounders
on the team. For NBA scouts, Smith has to show that his less than
impressive rebounding numbers were more a function of the presence of
other rebounders than any deficiency on his part.
